Savanna-Sabula bridge closed until late May

UPDATE: The overflow bridge over the backwaters of the Mississippi River on the north edge of Sabula will be closed until late May, preventing traffic from using the new Savanna-Sabula Bridge between Iowa and Illinois.

The new bridge opened in November 17, 2017 after years of construction.

According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, the causeway bridge was in the process of being replaced and an issue occurred during construction.

The replacement schedule is being accelerated, but the bridge will remain closed until a replacement is in place.

The bridge construction is expected to be completed in late May, weather and schedule permitting.

Until then, drivers will need to cross between Clinton and Fulton.

EARLIER REPORT

The Savanna-Sabula Bridge over the Mississippi River is closed until further notice due to concerns with the causeway bridge on the Iowa side.

A posted detour is in place, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced.

Drivers should take Illinois Route 84 south from Savanna to west on Illinois Route 136 in Fulton across the river to Iowa. Then, north on U.S. Highway 67 to U.S. Highway 52 and Iowa Route 64 in Sabula. Iowa drivers would take the reverse route.

The road is closed because of road maintenance activities, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation.
